BIOGRAPHY
Senator Duckworth is a second-term Illinois Senator (Democratic party), retired Army National Guard lieutenant colonel, and former US Representative for Illinois's 8th congressional district. Under the Obama administration, she was also appointed the Assistant Secretary of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, where she worked on key legislation to improve the lives of veterans. She continued her work on veterans' rights as a Representative on the Armed Services Committee.

She has also passed multiple bipartisan bills on the rights of mothers She was the first US senator to give birth while in office, and later the first to bring a baby, her daughter, onto the Senate floor. Sen. Duckworth was ranked the fifth-most effective Democratic senator in the 116th Congress by the Center for Effective Lawmaking.
